Regeneration of the Karlsruhe-Basel railway track
Document & Communication Management boosts clarity in large-scale infrastructure construction.
Project
The 182 km Karlsruhe-Base railway is an important route for national and international rail traffic, part of a crucial cargo corridor between Rotterdam and Genoa. The existing railway is more than 150 years old, and with more than 300 trains a day passing through, it is working to capacity. With current bottlenecks and quality restrictions, it is necessary that the line is adapted to accommodate increased traffic.
This ambitious project will see total modernisation of the railway, including construction or renovation of12 stations and stops, extending the line to four tracks, plus track and signal technology upgrades in-line with modern safety standards. This project is one of 13 pilot projects of the federal government, with several parts utilising BIM technology.

Challenge
This is an ambitious and lengthy project; planning must be meticulous to reduce any disruption to the rail traffic.
The works being carried out are varied, from construction to regeneration, and all project teams must be working from a single source of truth to ensure smooth delivery.
Solution
To ensure all project participants were receiving real-time, accurate data, Thinkproject’s Document & Communication Management solution was onboarded.
Result
With its ability to be used on handheld devices, and automatic syncronisation teams can work with transparency from anytime and anyplace. This proves particularly useful for the large number of drawings and documents generated.
