Efficiently managing 246km of UK coastline
NEC4 contract management supported with Thinkproject
Project
Coastal Partners is a specialist partnership formed of five councils in Hampshire and West Sussex, England, delivering coastal management and associated services across 246km of coastline. The teams involved lead a multitude of coastal management projects, from routine maintenance to major infrastructure works.
The Southsea Coastal Scheme is a flagship project for Coastal Partners and is currently the largest local authority-led Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) scheme in the UK. 4.5km of the Portsmouth coast is undergoing important work to reduce the risk of flooding and erosion for 10,000 homes and 700 businesses.
The circa £200mil project will revive and rejuvenate the Southsea seafront through major public-realm improvements, whilst delivering a world-class flood defense system to protect the city against a 1:200-year storm event for the next 100 years.

Challenge
With such a vast scope of area to cover, challenges can arise with keeping project managers, external contractors and the supply chain connected.
Delays, overspending, errors or costly rework are risk factors without optimal collaboration between all parties. Furthermore, if each council were to use separate digital solutions, data can become fragmented without a full audit trail.
Solution
Since 2015, Coastal Partners have been supported in their contract management administration with Thinkproject Commercial & Contract Management.
CONTRACTS, the fully integrated solution within Thinkproject, offers a central space for all project stakeholders to access, log and manage communication between parties. Early warnings, defects and more are digitised in a fully NEC4 compliant space, providing an automated audit of works completed.
Results
By utilising an integrated delivery model, Coastal Partners benefit from the key NEC4 principles being at the heart of their delivery. With collaboration at the heart of the principles, CONTRACTS enhances transparency between project parties, building trust, affording better clarity and reducing the risk of disputes.
The simplicity of CONTRACTS transforms common pain points into automated processes, allowing stakeholders to focus on operational excellence through scheduling shared events and reminders transparently for all parties.
The continued use of CONTRACTS for Coastal Partners provides an environment of clear project management and effective leadership, leading to consistently high standards of delivery throughout the programme.
