A milestone in digitalisation with Taiwan Highspeed Rail

The large-scale highspeed rail project connecting Taiwan was an early adopter of construction digitalisation

Taiwan Highspeed Rail

Project

In 2000, travelling from Taiwan’s capital Taipei to the industrial centre in Kaohsiung was a lengthy process. Considering the importance of the connection between the two cities, construction was started on Taiwan’s first high-speed rail line. Completed in 2005, the 350 km journey was cut to just 90 minutes.

Considered the largest infrastructure project in the world at the time, the project was divided into 12 ‘lots’. HOCHTIEF was involved in a joint venture to design and build approx. 40 km for Lot C 250, near Taichung. Works included bridge construction (both concrete and steel), plus tunnel excavation in the densely populated area. Due to high earthquake activity, roughly 90% of the lot needed to be built as viaducts.

Challenge

Due to the ambitious deadline (completion within 50 months), and the complexities of working across teams, time zones and in areas of high earthquake activity, it was crucial that health, safety and collaboration were at the forefront of the project.

Solution

Working digitally was a fresh concept in the early 2000s, with IT infrastructure and connectivity still posing challenges. Thinkproject could be operated both as a local installation on-premises and via the internet, which was an ideal solution for this large-scale project.

With Document & Communication Management, automatic data syncronisation meant up to date data was readily available for all locations. This was particularly useful for the project teams, who were working with a 7-hour time difference, alleviating down-time.

Result

This early adoption of digitalisation on a large-scale project marks an important milestone for Thinkproject. With the project success, it was confirmed that construction could be managed efficiently via the internet.

With Thinkproject, HOCHTIEF partners from India, Taiwan and Europe were able to communicate change requests, redlining and drawing management with peace of mind that the latest updates to the project would be fully visible, with an audit trail, to those participants in other locations.
