Open BIM used for new Westend Bridge construction
Integrated document management and BIM saves time and gives clarity
Project
Located on the A 100 autobahn, the 243-metre-long Westend Bridge is one of a series of pre-stressed concrete bridges that were built between 1950 and 1980. The Westend Bridge came under special observation as it struggled to accommodate modern traffic volumes that were not planned in its initial development. As renovation was not a possibility, it was decided that a full replacement was necessary. DEGES was commissioned to build the new structure.
This project was one of the first traffic projects to be planned using Open BIM. Based on the AIA BIM protocol, and the associated BIM processing plan, planning was carried out using BIM methodoly. In this project, role-based work was carried out in a virtual project room, and a digital approval process was piloted with the Federal Ministry of Transport and the State of Berlin.

Challenge
As with all road infrastructure projects, special attention must be given to keeping the highway network operational during construction time. It is crucial that delays are kept to a minimum through careful and robust planning.
Solution
Document & Communication Management and Virtual Design & Construction Management from Thinkproject were introduced to the project. Within the platform, document management and BIM are integrated, reducing siloed working for project teams.
