Sant Joan de Deu Barcelona Hospital takes on digitalisation challenge with impressive results
Thinkproject talks to Andrea Cascio, Technical Office of the Sant Joan de Deu Hospital (HSJD), about the works for the hospital’s Neonatal Unit
About Sant Joan de Déu Hospital
Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona Hospital (HSJD) is a private non-profit institution belonging to the Hospitaller Order of the Brothers of Saint John of God with more than 300 care centres worldwide. Its work has always been to help people under the fundamental values of hospitality, quality, respect, responsibility, and spirituality.
Specifically, the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona is one of the main references in and out of Catalonia in paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology with the main objective of caring for the mother and child from before birth until the child comes of age.
In this context, the HSJD in collaboration with the Hospital Clinic de Barcelona, has created the BCNatal, a reference in the care of mother and baby even when there are complications in the foetus that involve situations of high complexity, offering women a comprehensive and leading care in the field of Obstetrics and Foetal Pathology.
Given the high number of assistances provided at the hospital (more than 6500 deliveries are attended per year), 2005 saw that the 15-year plan of works was started with the objective of reforming the main existential areas of the hospital. It has gone from an area of 40,000m2 to 80,000m2.
This increase is due to the hospital’s purpose of caring for both the patient and the families. Every time an area is reformed, it is done with the family in mind as well. From the distribution and equipment, to the decoration of the different areas, they are conceived to make the hospital a much more welcoming place for patients and families.
The neonatal area project
In 2019, work began on the renovation of the new-born area, where the number of beds increased from 38 to 44, distributed in 32 wards the great majority of which are individual beds and have personal space for companions. The expansion has meant going from 800m2 to 2000m2.
The objective of achieving the greatest possible comfort during the hospital stay is reflected in the privacy and comfort that is strived to be achieved, with individual spaces for patients and families, plus common areas where you can relax or unwind without leaving the hospital.
All of this is accompanied by technological improvements that allow wireless monitoring and an alarmed reception without the need to enter the ward, thus giving families improved privacy in delicate situations.
One of the hospital’s objectives is to move all the areas that are currently communal towards individual spaces to improve the experience of patients and families in the hospital.
Contribution of Thinkproject to the neonatal project
The implementation of the collaboration platform tpCDE has improved the management of project documentation and communication between different participants. All document revisions, approvals, versions, and similar, have been carried out in a single platform where the different teams involved in the project have access dependent on their roles or access permissions.
By using tpCDE it has been possible to have all information organised and structured according to the requirements of the project and in a single place for consultation by all.
Thinkproject and social commitment
Thinkproject celebrates its 20th anniversary by highlighting one of the projects that began in 2019 with a very important objective, the rehabilitation and expansion of the neonatal area of the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona. With a strong purpose of helping to build a better world and with a clear orientation towards social commitment, Thinkproject has offered its collaboration platform tpCDE, plus support and consultancy services at no charge in aid of the neonatal unit’s completion.
